Radio Netherlands Program Preview - March 22-28

Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this week, beginning on Saturday.

SATURDAY 22 MARCH
*** The State We're In ***
This week in The State We're In, the Dalai Lama has claimed that China has been conducting 'cultural genocide' against the people of Tibet. But is it true? And what does 'cultural genocide' mean anyway? Is it a legal term? We ask an International Lawyer and Tibetans what they think.

Plus Zimbabwe goes to the polls next week. Is Robert Mugabe likely to win yet again despite being accused of being one of Africa's most despotic leaders, correspondent Harm van Dam reports from Harare. Plus a Zimbabwean refugee in South Africa tells us why she fled the country.

In our focus on surveillance, we meet the artist who found himself being so ineptly investigated by the American authorities that he decided to do it himself. And we meet a woman from former East Germany who discovered that she was being spied on by her own husband.

Finally, The State We're In's Paddy Maguire reports from One World Film Festival in Prague where dissidents, directors and dissident directors use the moving picture to promote human rights.

These stories and many more in this week's The State We're In.

Also on the theme of religion, we take a look at the image of Muslim women in Holland - and it might just surprise you.

Political Editor John Tyler will be in with headlines from The Hague and, of course, Robbert Tilli will drop by with your weekly Dutch music fix; this week he'll tell us about 'King Jack'.

Naima Albdiouni - 'Ice-creams at Easter'

These days it's difficult to turn on the television or radio or read a newspaper without being confronted with something to do with Islam and its current impact on western life. It seems to be monopolising as well as polarising the political environment. But what about the impact of westernisation on Muslim countries and the counter force of radical Islam?

It's this that the young Flemish writer Naima Albdiouni has focused on in her short story 'Ice-creams at Easter'. It's a portrait of a few inhabitants of the Moroccan city Agadir, a city which was totally destroyed in an earthquake in 1960 and subsequently rebuilt with more than just a nod to its western neighbours.

The story takes place as Morocco prepares itself for a visit by the Sheik of Qatar, but not everyone is excited with his arrival as progress and tradition confront each other head on.

On Earthbeat this week we go from the ghoulish to the futuristic to the simply practical...

New Delhi is still reeling from the uncovering of a kidney stealing racket responsible for exploiting the poorest of the poor for their organs to sell at a huge profit to rich westeners. Earthbeat talks to some of the people involved and examines the issue's multi-faceted ethical dilemmas.

And we look at the different sides of a possible super fast mode of transport - Europe to Australia in just a few hours? But at what price to our planet?

And sustainable fishing, one man in Holland who's doing his bit for the fishing industry, but going back to the romantic idea of fishing.
